One of Rechlin's test pilots, Hans-Werner Lerche had a similiar reaction to Wolfrum when he had to fly a repaired P-47 from Caen to Rechlin in November 1943: The P-47 cockpit could baffle even an experienced pilot. I gradually managed to ascertain the functions of most of the levers and instruments, but there were some obscure controls, the.

The aircraft was assessed by Luftwaffe test pilot Hans-Werner Lerche. [1] Lerche noted that the La-5FN excelled at altitudes below 3,000 m (9,843 ft) but suffered from short range and flight time of only 40 minutes at cruise engine power.

A Luftwaffe Test Pilot's Account of a Captured B-17 Luftwaffe Test Pilot by Hans Werner Lerche Perhaps there were other aircraft that were even more pleasant to fly than the B-17, because it did have its drawbacks: for example, the forces acting on the ailerons were relatively high, and the rudder felt as if it were set in concrete. But it was much more important that the aircraft was easy to.

A while back (OK, a few years ago), I read a book by Hans-Werner Lerche (1914-1994). He was a Luftwaffe Test Pilot during WW2, and flew over 125 different aircraft types, including evaluation flights of many allied aircraft, most of them after only visual examinations of the aeroplane (so no training or handbooks!). He was the principal pilot.

The Dornier Do 335 was one of the fastest propeller-driven aircraft ever flown. The Germans claimed that a pilot flew a Do 335 at a speed of 846 km/h (474 mph) in level flight at a time when the official world speed record was 755 km/h (469 mph). Two liquid-cooled engines each developing about 1,750 hp powered the Do 335.
